Abstract

This paper is entitled Gestures Usage for Students’ Words Understanding in Learning Vocabulary (A Case Study in an English Course in Bandung). The aims of this study are: (1) to investigate types of gestures used by a teacher in teaching new vocabulary to young learners; (2) to find out how the teacher realized each type of gesture; (3) to find out the reasons why the teacher used gestures while explaining vocabulary; and (4) the difficulties encountered by the students during learning vocabulary by using gestures. Data were collected by using observation and interview. Furthermore, the data were analyzed qualitatively. This study involved young learner teacher of an English course and her students. The result showed that the teacher applied all types of gestures proposed by McNeill (1992) when explaining new vocabulary which were implemented by hands movement, pointing movement, flicking fingers, tapping motion and stomping feet followed by some different facial expressions. The teacher used gestures as media to explain difficult words, to recall words from previous meeting and to maintain students’ word memory. However, the students found it difficult to understand vocabulary that was explained only by gestures and to comprehend unclear gestures. From the findings, it is recommended that English teachers apply gestures in teaching new vocabulary to young learners since gestures are simplest media which everybody can use easily. Additionally, gestures can also help the students to memorize the vocabulary taught in interesting way, so that they can retrieve the words in appropriate context in the future.
