Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is a case study which examines the use of Total Physical Response Songs in helping young learners to improve their listening skill. This study also investigates the responses given by the students towards the use of Total Physical Response songs in listening practice. The study was conducted at SDN 2 Cihideunghilir, in Kuningan and participated by 30 elementary third-grade students. For its framework for analysis, this study implements both qualitative and quantitative approaches to answer the research questions. Observation, questionnaire, and interview were employed to obtain the data. The data were then analyzed by applying theories related to the issues raised in this study. The theories are Total Physical Response, Total Physical Response Songs, the characteristics of young learners, and teaching listening skill to young learners. In addition, listening test was also employed to gain quantitative data. The data from listening pre-test and post-test was analyzed by using paired sample t-test on SPSS™ 17.0 for Windows™ program and the calculation of index gain. This study shows that the implementation of TPR Songs during teaching program was quite successful, despite some limitations. The qualitative and quantitative data shows the improvement of students’ listening skill. There is an improvement on the students’ listening test score after the implementation of TPR Songs. The paired sample t-test shows a significant difference between the pre-test mean value and post-test mean value of the class. All students’ scores increase with mostly medium and high index gain. The students respond positively towards the use of TPR Songs during listening practice. The students said they were having fun with the songs and the actions. They also enjoyed the activity. Despite some difficulities faced by the students in the teaching program, TPR Songs motivates them to get involved actively in the learning process. Therefore, based on the findings, it is recommended that Total Physical Response Songs to be implemented during English teaching and learning process in elementary schools in order to improve students’ listening skills. It is also important for teachers to select particular songs and actions appropriate with the students’ needs, interests, and the curriculum as well.
