Abstract
The aims of this study entitled “The Representation of Arifinto on his Porn-watching Case: A Critical Discourse Analysis of News Reporting in Two English News Sites in Indonesia” are to investigate the representations of Arifinto regarding his porn-watching case and the ideology underlying representations. The study focuses on news reporting related to Arifinto and his porn-watching case, which has been published by two distinctive English news sites in Indonesia: The Jakarta Post (www.thejakartapost) and the Jakarta Globe (www.jakartaglobe.com). Four related articles are selected. The analyses of these reports comply with the frameworks of Critical Discourse Analysis and engage several analytical tools from Systemic Functional Grammar, which are undertaken in several stages. First, Arifinto’s representations in the news reporting are described, interpreted, and explained using Thematization and Transitivity in order to see the roles of Arifinto and the way he is situated in the news reporting. This is followed by an examination of underlying ideologies behind the news reporting based on the representations. It is found that, based on Thematic analysis, Arifinto is the main Theme in the articles. Meanwhile, based on the analysis of Transitivity, Arifinto is represented as being guilty, as a role model, and as a victim. These representations suggest at least three ideologies, i.e. egalitarianism, balanced reporting, and business.
