Abstract

A growing body of research have been conducted to analyze issues about homosexuals character in a novel. However only very little has been done to investigate the lives of homosexuals who have survived living in heteronormative society without being marginalized. Relevant to this, the present study aims at finding out how homosexuals are portrayed and in what ways are the homosexual relationship accepted in a heteronormative society that are found in Call Me by Your Name, a novel written by André Aciman (2007). Adopting Butler’s concept of Gender performativity (1990) and Foucaults’ Technology of Self (1988) as major theoretical frameworks, this study employs descriptive text analysis in order to answer the research questions. The results of the study show that the homosexuals are portrayed as having good qualities which may reject the prevailing stereotypes of homosexuals in the society. Therefore, the society shows their acceptance by providing them with liberty, safety and privacy. However, from the analysis, clearly, dominant discourse as represented by the society holds a great power to accept or to reject a particular group of people to be their members. As being homosexuals is regarded as challenging one of the norms of heteronormative values, in order to be accepted, the homosexuals have to compensate their flaws by displaying outstanding attributes.
