Abstract

The present study is entitled “The Legitimation Strategies in the Statements of the Secretary General of United Nations regarding Libyan Conflict: a Critical Discourse Analysis”. It analyzes the legitimation strategies used by the United Nations on Libyan conflict, their linguistic realizations, and the extent to which the actions are legitimized using van Leeuwen’s framework regarding discursive construction of legitimation (2008) under the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis. This study is largely qualitative, but some quantification is employed to support the description. The collected data are in the form of statements or remarks delivered by the Secretary General of UN regarding the United Nations’ response to the Libyan conflict. The data are analyzed in the unit of clause to reveal the legitimation strategies used in the texts. This study finds that from four major types of legitimation asserted by van Leeuwen (2008), there are only three types of legitimation that occur in the texts, i.e. rationalization (50%), authorization (44.12%), and moral evaluation (5.88%). Those three types of legitimation are mostly identified from verbal process, relational process, and modal verb “will”. The UN’s actions in the texts are strongly legitimized by referring to regulation as the basis of the actions, supported by the logical explanation to support the UN’s actions, and the reference to moral value of humanity to help each other.
