Abstract

This research is motivated by interest to examine and describe various characteristics of three generations, that is 80s, 90s, and 2000s generation that represented in Gustav Paat’s TikTok videos. The video of generation differences caused a misunderstanding and provoked strife between generations. Therefore, this research has purpose to find out the meaning of the signs that they used to represent the three generations in the video. This research used Charles Sanders Peirce's theory of semiotics which divides into three elements of meaning, namely signs, objects, and interpretants. The method that used in this research is a qualitative approach and descriptive research. Data collection methods that used in this research is observation technique, record technique, and documentation technique. This research used three ways to analyst data, that is data reduction, data display, dan conclusion drawing/verification. Based on the analysis, the signs that creator used are portraying the differences of characters that belonged to each of 80s, 90s, and 2000s generation. Apart from that, the depiction of 2000s generation is quite contradictory because there is subjectivity and can influence people's perceptions about the 2000s generation, so it offends them.
