Abstract

Entitled “Nationalism across generations in Nagabonar Jadi 2” the present paper concerns the textual analysis of “Nagabonar Jadi 2”, a novel authored by Akmal Nasery Basral, in a nation and nationalism framework with the employment of nationalism theories. The analysis is directed to unveil the expressions of nationalism across generations as evidenced in the text. Based on the findings, there are three different manifestations of nationalism for the older generation found in the novel under study. The first form is manifestation of nationalism in the form of references to the Netherland and Japan colonialism. The second form is manifestation of nationalism in the form of appreciation for unifying symbols and the third form is manifestation of nationalism in the form of willingness to sacrifice for the country. There are also three different manifestation of nationalism for the younger generation found in the novel under study. The first is manifestation of nationalism in the form of the preference to a global outlook. The second is manifestation of nationalism in the form of the preference to a future outlook. And the third is manifestation of nationalism in the form of preference of an urban lifestyle. The significance of different nationalism across generations is manifested, mainly during conflicts. It is revealed that nationalism between the two generations is different because of the generation gap. The difference of nationalism across generations shows that nationalism is not static but changes from time to time along with the cultural changes and globalization.
