Abstract

Gender equality or equity is one of the issues that many people have been keeping an eye on. Many people, mostly women, still need to struggle to get their freedom in gender equality or equity. This study aims to discover what are the reasons for the two female lead characters in the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007) by Khaled Husseini struggling to get freedom from their husband. This study tried to explore feminism in terms of gender struggle, especially in the topic related to fourth wave feminism. The study applies a theoretical framework from Nusantara et al. (2021) about four reasons for gender struggles and the theory of characterisation by Reams (2015). The data were collected from the background story of both characters until they gather to get freedom from their husband. The analysis found that both characters faced all of the gender struggles but with different intensities. Mariam faced a lot of struggles in Love, while Laila faced the struggle of the Fact of Life more. The background of their past life becomes the reason they faced different struggles to confront their husband.
