Abstract

The research entitled "The Cultural Imperialism of Native American as Reflected in The Last of the Mohicans: A Postcolonial Analysis" aims to investigate the ways in which the imperialism influences Native American culture and the types of resistance that come from them as depicted in the text. The research is qualitative that it analyzes the data which consists of words, phrases, sentences, dialogues, and narration that are relate to cultural imperialism and resistance. It employs postcolonial perspective to analyze the textual evidences from the novel The Last of the Mohicans written by James Fenimore Cooper. The results show that the cultural imperialism specifically the oppressions of Native American in the novel can be classified into culture insertion and cultural clash. For the culture insertion, the writer classifies it into the use of colonial language as the legal language, gospel of Christianity, and the situation in which the colonists’ acquaint new cultures toward the natives. Whereas, there are three types of resistance that come from Native American as the response toward those oppressions: affirmation, modification, and rejection process. The research shows that the imperialism happens through aspects of culture.
