Abstract

The present research is entitled Critical Discourse Analysis of The Jakarta Post’s Reports on the 19th ASEAN Summit: the Portrayals of Social Actions. The social actions refer to a set of actions and reactions of the leaders attending the Summit and other people’s reactions towards the Summit. This study was conducted for the purpose of dismantling the ways sosial actions were portrayed in the news reports. In addition to this, this investigation was also aimed at pondering the newspaper’s tendency behind those portrayals. Within this descriptive study was used CDA method, specifically Theo Van Leeuwen’s theory of representing social action. The analysis yielded 107 actions and 36 reactions of leaders. It was discovered that they were portrayed in activation (23%) and de-activation (77%), in agentialization (81%) and de-agentialization (19%), in concretization (52%) and abstraction (48%) and in single-determination (98%) and overdetermination (2%). Regarding the portrayals of other people’s reactions, it was found that there were 23 reactions. Quantitatively, they were portrayed in activation (14%) and de-activation (86%), in agentialization (40%) and de-agentialization (60%) in concretization (96%) and abstraction (4%), and in single-overdetermination (100%). These emergences of transformations helped the writer to see the newspaper’s tendency in which The Jakarta Post tends to smooth major power leaders’ actions and reactions, specifically Obama’s, considered harmful for the Asia Pacific region and rather undermine ASEAN and other Asia Pacific leaders’ actions and reactions constituting their contribution to their region. In addition to this, the newspaper also tends to show the obviousness of people’s bewilderment and dissatisfaction as concerns the Summit.
