Abstract

Since English has been introduced to elementary students in Indonesia, speaking technique is believed to occupy crucial position in English teaching issue. However, teachers in public schools rarely focus on the production of spoken language and rely on accuracy yet neglect the fluency. English Courses appear to provide language classrooms which, as opposites, provide pupils more speaking experiences. Hence, this paper is conducted to portray teaching speaking techniques implemented by a teacher of children class in an English Course in Bandung, West Java. The research used the theory of PPP procedure by Harmer. Since this is a descriptive study, qualitative methods are used. There were eight observations, two interviews and document analysis from syllabus and lesson plans conducted. Based on three data colleting techniques above, it can be concluded that there were seven techniques which were implemented in significant systematic pattern: Presentation in listening activities, Practices activities, and Speaking activities. Additionally, the data showed that there were several obstacles faced by the teacher in implementing the techniques. However, the teacher had done some efforts to cope with the obstacles. It will be very useful if future research on the same topic analyzes the use of the systematic sequences above in different level of learners. Overall, considering the urgency of speaking, English teachers in Indonesia need to employ appropriate techniques for teaching speaking to young learners in both formal and informal school.
