Abstract

ABSTRACT This research analyzes the construction of hybridity in Kuegler’s novel “Child of The Jungle”. The analysis is geared towards answering these questions: (1) how is hybridity constructed as evidenced in the novel? and (2) what constructs hybridity as evidenced in the novel?. Framed by a qualitative approach in the form of a descriptive method, the close reading strategy is applied and a postcolonial theoretical framework is used to make meaning of the analysis. The results of the research reveal the hybridity construction of the main character is constructed through personal orientation and identification. There are three phases of identity orientation in the main character. First is Fayu oriented identity. The main character feels and acts as The Fayus do. Second is German oriented identity in which the main character encourages her love to Germany. The last is shifting between Fayu and German in which the main character identity shifts and has ambivalent attitudes between Fayu and German. The contributing factors are triggered by six factors: family, peers, personal experience, societal, vacation to homeland, and migration to Germany. In addition, the construction of a hybrid identity is an unstable and a dynamic constructions, which possibly change depending on certain matters. This makes the identity identification is based not truly on one single identity.
