Abstract

This research entitled “The Socio-Pragmatics Analysis: The Case Study of Muhadkly Acho’s Humors in Stand Up Comedy Performances” is aimed (1) to describe the general structures of his jokes; (2) to reveal the most common types of humorous interactions; (3) to describe the social functions of humor. The data used in the study were four videos of Muhadkly Acho’s Stand Up Comedy performances that were downloaded from Youtube.com. The transcriptions of the videos were the subjects of analysis. The theories used were Alexander (2009) for answering the research problem of the general structure of the jokes; and Salvatore Attardo (1994) regarding with the research problems of the types of humorous interactions and the social functions of humor. The result of this research indicates that (1) the general structure of the jokes consists of setup, punchline and tags. A joke is considered well-structured if at least it consists on setup and punchline, while the use of tags are optional. (2) Joke telling is the most used type of humorous interactions in Muhadkly Acho’s performances. Stand Up comedy is performed in informal and casual settings. Since joke telling is the simplest form of the type of humorous interactions, it is understandable that Muhadkly Acho uses it the most in his performances. (3) The social functions of humor that are found in the research are social management, mediation, defunctionalization, and the secondary function of humor. Humor is not only for entertainment needs, but also for conveying social norms.Key terms: Stand Up comedy, Humor, Jokes
