Abstract
The use of POEAW with virtual simulations is a combination of learning phases that include predict-observe-explain-apply-write and the use of virtual simulations. This research aims to increase physics literacy and reduce students' misconceptions. The research was conducted using mixed methods, with an embedded mixed-method research design. The sample in this study was 54 students in the age range of 15–17 years in class XI from a high school in Bandung. The instruments used in this study consisted of physics literacy test questions and four-tier test questions. The increase in students' physics literacy was analyzed using N-gain. While the decrease in student misconceptions was analyzed using the Misconception Reduction Quantity (KPM), the characteristics of the reduction in misconceptions were analyzed by categorizing changes in misconceptions experienced by students. The effectiveness of POEAW learning using virtual simulations compared to POEAW without the help of virtual simulations was analyzed using effect size analysis and different tests through the Mann-Whitney U test and its follow-up tests. This study's results for increasing physics literacy show an N-gain value of 0.56 with the interpretation of "moderate." The Quantity Reducing Misconceptions (KPM) results show a value of 0.83 with the interpretation of "high". The KPM results show that there has been a decrease in students' misconceptions about optical instrument material. In general, students experience a decrease in misconceptions with the Acceptable Change (AC) category. The results of the different tests showed a significant difference between the control and experimental groups, and the effect size calculation results were 0.56 in the moderate category. Thus, POEAW assisted by virtual simulation is effective in reducing students' misconceptions about optical instruments.
