Abstract

This study aims to reveal the impact of interpersonal relationships between GBK and students which are realized in the selection of evaluative language (Appraisal). To explain the data on interpersonal relationships between GBK and students, this study relies on the LSF theory, which was initiated by Halliday and colleagues, in particular applying the theory of Appraisal by Martin, White, and Rose (2003, 2005, and 2007). The methodology used in this research is descriptive qualitative research, which involves natural data that occurs naturally without any intervention or manipulation. The data in this study are conversations between GBK and students in individual and classical counseling services. The collected data were analyzed through the following stages: (1) Language coding according to the theory of Appraisal by Martin, White, and Rose (2003, 2005, and 2007); (2) calculating the occurrence of each language code that has been formulated; and (3) describing the data based on the theory of Appraisal by Martin, White, and Rose (2003, 2005, and 2007). The results of the analysis show that the impact of using Appraisal to establish interpersonal relationships is evidenced by (1) the dominant engagement pattern to show GBK and students's position or stance towards the speech being advanced and anticipating the position and stance of the interlocutor as well; (2) the pattern of using inscribed attitudes is more than token attitudes to avoid misunderstandings; (3) students' positive response patterns are more than negative ones which indicate students' approval of the evaluative language utterances realized by GBK. The realization of such evaluatif laguage (Appraisal) has an impact on students' acceptance of the teacher's speech which shows solidarity and affiliation between the two participants. (3) Appraisal patterns that are in line with the counseling principles used by GBK contribute to create a harmonious relationship between the partisipants. The results of this study indicate that the Appraisal used by GBK and students can reveal interpersonal relationships which in turn help to achieve communication goals in counseling services.
