Abstract

Nowadays, teacher competence becomes an important issue. The elementary school teachers of physical education must have competences. Unfortunately, the competences of elementary school teachers of physical education were still low. The competences that should be mastered are pedagogic and professional. Those teachers' competences should be held out, even they should be improved. Therefore, it is important for elementary school teachers of physical education to conduct the competence improvement in order their competences quality increasingly. This research aims at describing and analyzing the efforts of elementary school physical education teachers in rising competence and supporting factors. Research applies qualitative method through "naturalistic phenomenological" approach. Operationally, this method, locates the researcher as main instrument in collecting data. Data were collected through interviews, and documentations. Data were described in the form of words and analyzed by using inductive analysis method. The population of this research was elementary school teachers of physical education in Kecamatan Bukit Intan Kota Pangkalpinang. This samples research were: 1) five elementary school teachers of physical education; 2) five headmasters; and 3) four chiefs group (gugus) ofphysical education. Based on the research process results are as follows: 1) physical education teachers' comprehension on pedagogic competence come to sufficient level; 2) physical education teachers' comprehension on professional competence was in low to sufficient level; 3) efforts of physical education teachers in increasing pedagogic and professional competences were: reading books relating to physical education and sports; asking other teachers' friends, joining education and training; and becoming judges or committee in sport events; 4) headmaster's support to the efforts performed by physical education teachers were low; and 5) the role ofKelompok Kerja Guru (KKG) in increasing pedagogic and professional competence ofphysical education teachers were not shown due to the inactivity of the KKG.
