Abstract
The background of the research was begun by a need for scientific performance and observation media to overcome the difficulties of direct observation in astronomy lectures. The purpose of this research is to produce an astronomy learning program using scientific investigation (PA-INSA) to improve the high-level cognitive abilities, scientific reasoning and visual literacy that are valid and tested. This research used mixed methods with embedded experimental control group design model. The subjects involved in the implementation of the PA-INSA program were 37 experiment group students and 32 control group students in Physics Education Study Programs in several pre-service teacher universities in Semarang. The research instruments were in the form of tests, observation sheets and attitude scales. The analysis techniques of expert and items validations were done using Rasch model. The quantitative data analysis technique was carried out by parametric testing with SPSS 21 while the qualitative data analysis technique used Nvivo 12. The PA-INSA program that has been successfully developed the characteristics of inquiry learning phase in scientific investigation activities that have been designed and assisted by Heavens View media. The implementation of the PA-INSA program can improve high-level cognitive abilities, scientific reasoning, and visual literacy with medium and high improvement categories. The effectiveness of the PA-INSA program implementation in improving high-level cognitive abilities, scientific reasoning and visual literacy is in the medium category. The PA-INSA program has an impact with a strong category effect size. A positive correlation was found higher between cognitive abilities, scientific reasoning, and visual literacy. The student responses strongly agree with the implementation of the PA-INSA program which can increase curiosity, enthusiasm, and provide experience of observing activities in astronomy learning. The conclusion of this study states that the development and implementation of the PA-INSA program can improve high-level cognitive abilities, scientific reasoning, and visual literacy of pre-service physics teachers.
