Abstract
This study aims to identify misconceptions in eighth grade students on earth layer, earthquake, and volcano using a four-tier instrument on one of the junior highschool in Bandung. This study used a quantitative research method with a descriptive survey type. Instrument that was used in this study is a four-tier test instrument consisting of 11 questions. This study was conducted on 31 eighth grade students from one of the junior high school in Bandung. Based on the result of data analysis, the profile of students' conceptions consists of 4 categories: misconceptions (33,55%) mostly on the sub-sub concept of of earth’s structure and the causes of tectonic plate movements, partial understanding (28,06%), mostly on the sub-sub concept of the distribution of volcanoes, sound understanding (21,29%) mostly on the sub-sub concept of action during an earthquake, and not understand the concept (17,10%) mostly on the sub-sub concept of the phase of the earth's core. Misconception that were identified with the largest percentage were in the sub-sub concept of earth’s structure and the cause of movement of the plate with 54,84% each. Based on this study, four-tier instrument succeed in identifying misconceptions on earth’s layer, earthquake, and volcano.
