Abstract

Abstract. Problem solving ability is closely related to students' beliefs in solving problems. The belief that students have in completing certain tasks or actions is called self-efficacy. This study aims to analyze and describe the process of solving students' mathematical problems in terms of self-efficacy, a description of students' mathematical problem solving abilities in terms of self-efficacy, and what obstacles students face in solving mathematical problems in terms of self-efficacy. The method used in this research is qualitative research with case study design. The subjects of this study were students of class VIII SMPN Tanjung Jabung Timur, Jambi Province. Data was collected using questionnaires, tests and interviews. Questionnaires were given to see the level of students' self-efficacy, tests were given to measure students' mathematical problem solving abilities, and interviews were conducted to strengthen the research findings. Questionnaires were given to 32 research subjects, while tests and interviews were conducted on 6 selected subjects with details of 2 students with high self-efficacy, 2 students with moderate self-efficacy, and 2 students with low self-efficacy. The results of this study are: 1). In the process of solving mathematical problems, in general students with high, medium and low self-efficacy in each stage of solving mathematical problems have good problem solving abilities. 2) In the description of mathematical problem solving abilities, students with high self-efficacy are in the very good category. Students with self-efficacy are in the good category. Meanwhile, students with low self-efficacy have different mathematical solving abilities, namely good and very good categories. This study also found that students with low self-efficacy had good problem solving abilities. 3) Constraints faced by students during the problem-solving process such as students are not used to working on problems with problem-solving steps, are less thorough, just want to finish quickly, and sometimes forget to write down the conclusion of the answer. Students also feel nervous in answering questions, feel doubtful because the answers given are not necessarily correct, feel worried about failing to solve the questions given, and feel anxious in working on the questions given. Students should be accustomed to working on problems in the form of problem solving and students need to be encouraged to increase student confidence.
