Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) patients often experience glucose auto-oxidation which causes comorbid hyperlipidemia so that it can increase the risk of macro or microvascular dysfunction. Patients with DM-hyperlipidemia have a mortality risk of 1.93 times higher. Antioxidants are thought to have potential as dual therapeutic agents for DM-hyperlipidemia. In this study, the use of several closed seed plant extracts (Angiospermae) as antidiabetic, antioxidant, and antihyperlipidemic was studied to select plants with the best activity which are expected to be processed for the advancement of the field of medicine. The study was conducted on 10 different flowering plant (Angiospermae) extracts to determine the effect of each extract on antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antihyperlipidemic activity in alloxan-induced mice. The research conducted is a literature review on 10 Scopus indexed international journal articles published in 2010-2020 with 7 Q3 articles and 3 Q1 articles. The results showed that the plants that had these three activities were tropical plants from various families, with the parts used were the aerial parts of the plant (leaves, bark, flowers, and fruit). The secondary metabolites that are generally contained are phenolics, flavonoids, and alkaloids. Plants that have high antioxidant activity are extracts of Baccaurea ramiflora, Annona senegalensis, Grewia asiatica, and Semecarpus anardicum. Plants with the highest antidiabetic activity were Antigonon leptopus, Grewia asiatica, Semecarpus anardicum, Oldenlandia corymbosa, and Baccaurea ramiflora. Meanwhile, the plants with the highest antihyperlipidemic activity were Grewia asiatica and Phyllanthus longiflorus. The results of the analysis of the relationship between the three pharmacological activities (antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antihyperlipidemic) produced by the extract showed that the three activities did not have a simple relationship because the results of the analysis did not show a consistent pattern, it could be caused by many other influencing factors.
