Abstract

This research focuses on positive and negative politeness strategies in directive requesting speech acts. This research is conducted because of the importance of knowledge of language politeness, especially in asking for foreign speakers. The purpose of this study is to determine the form of the use of positive politeness strategies and negative politeness strategies in directive speech acts with the requesting function. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative research. The data was taken from directive speech with the function of requesting (requestives) contained in the television drama “School 2013”. Meanwhile, the data collection method used in this research was the literature study method and the listening method with the speech-free listening technique and note-taking technique. This research was conducted using the theory of politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson . The results found positive politeness strategy are more widely used, namely 60 data (34%). The factor that contributes to a more widely used of positive politeness strategies in this television drama is due to the frequent used of this utterance by the teacher to the students and speakers to their peers. By using positive politeness strategies, speakers can show a sense of familiarity or a greater sense of care for the interlocutor, it gives the impression that the speaker is on the same boat as the interlocutor and give the impression that the request made is not only of importance to the speaker.
