Abstract

This research sought to investigate students’ attitude to learning English as a foreign language. It also examined how students’ attitudes were reflected in their English learning process. A descriptive qualitative methodology was employed to reveal the attitudes of junior high school students towards learning English as a foreign language. There were 30 seventh grade students who were participated in this research. The data were obtained through students’ questionnaire, students’ interview, and classroom observation in order to answer the research questions. Regarding the three aspects of attitudes: cognitive, affective, and behavioural, majority of students showed positive attitudes to learning English as a foreign language. Students revealed their capability to follow the English material during learning English. They were enthusiastic coming to the English class and enjoyable the learning activities. Moreover, they also paid attention to their English teacher. Therefore, they did the task well. Students’ attitudes were also reflected in their English learning process in the class. In the sense that their attitudes seem to affect their understanding, their participation, their interest, their perceived benefits in learning English, as well as their strategies in improving their learning English.
