Syarifah, Firdha Zainu (2019) INVESTIGATING STUDENTS' CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONING IN LEARNING TO READ A NARRATIVE TEXT. S2 thesis, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia.
Abstract
This study reports students’ critical thinking questioning in learning to read a narrative text. The study was employed to investigate the students’ types of question, how the questions asked by the students show their critical thinking, and how the instruction in questioning helps the students to be critical thinkers. The study involved seventeen of ninth-grade students in a junior high school in Bandung and the researcher herself as the teacher of this study. A qualitative case study was implemented in this study in which the data were gained from the students’ written documents and the classroom observation. The findings revealed that the questions that the students made were categorized into five types of Bloom’s taxonomy, namely remember, understand, analyze, evaluate, and create in which evaluate category occupied the highest frequency among the other question categories. Further, from the students’ questions, they depicted the students’ critical thinking skills: interpretation, evaluation, analysis, and inference. The students’ ability in questioning could not be separated from the teacher’s model to ask and answer critical thinking questions. From the observation in the classroom discussion, it showed that the instruction in questioning helped the students to weigh up pros and cons of the issue, understand the issue from various perspectives, and reflect the issue to generate some possible solutions to solve the problem. Keywords: critical thinking, questioning, a narrative text, reading.
