Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving skills are part of the high order of thinking aspects of mathematics which enable students to develop intellectual and non-intellectual aspects so that they can be a factor in student success in learning. In solving problems, students are influenced by several factors including cognitive style. The Cognitive style will influence the way students receive, organize, process and arrange information obtained based on experience with how students think, solve problems and learn. In addition, gender differences also influence the way students think of solving problems. The purpose of this study is to describe the relationship between problem solving ability, cognitive style, and gender. This research method is descriptive qualitative research that produces a descriptive analysis of the data analysis conducted. The selection of research subjects is based on the consideration that the subject has studied the material of flat side space. The results of data analysis show that 1) Field Dependent male students tend to think in general, lack understanding of concepts well and lack conscientiousness in the completion process. Male students are better at reasoning, whereas accuracy and regularity are poor. 2) Field Dependent female students tend to use illustrations in interpreting information and are not good in the analysis. 3) Field Independent male students tend to think analytically, more able to minimize errors in mathematical problem solving than Field Dependent male students. 4) Field Independent female students tend to think analytically, pay more attention to their accuracy and accuracy in solving problems and tend to be more organized in carrying out stages of problem solving.
