Abstract

ABSTRAK PENGEMBANGAN MEDIA KOMUNIKASI ALTERNATIF DAN AUGMENTATIVE PECS DALAM KETERAMPILAN KOMUNIKASI KINESIK ANAK DOWN SYNDROME Dio Gitarama Subrata 1605157 Anak down syndrome adalah individu dengan kebutuhan khusus sebagai dampak dari kondisi yang dialaminya. Pada penelitian ini ditemukan anak down syndrome usia 12 tahun mengalami hambatan komunikasi kompleks. Ketika anak berkomunikasi dengan orang tuanya menggunakan media komunikasi. Namun komunikasi yang terjadi antara anak dengan orang tua belum efektif. Kesenjangan yang terjadi pada kondisi faktual menjadikan penelitian ini mengadaptasi pendekatan penelitian dan pengembangan research and development untuk menentukan langkah-langkah penelitian. Tujuannya adalah mengembangkan media komunikasi alternatif dan augmentatif PECS. Secara teknis penelitian dan pengembangan ini menggunakan mix methode: sequential exploratory design, berurutan dimulai dari metode kualitatif deskriptif untuk mengetahui kondisi objektif keterampilan komunikasi kinesik anak down syndrome dan media komunikasi yang digunakannya untuk berkomunikasi saat ini kemudian metode kuantitatif eksperimen single subject research: design reversal A-B-A untuk mengetahui efektivitas media komunikasi alternatif dan augmentatif PECS dalam meningkatkan keterampilan komunikasi kinesik anak down syndrome. Diketahui hasil analisis kualitatif bahwa potensi berkomunikasi anak down syndrome saat ini hanya komunikasi kinesik. Media komunikasi yang digunakan anak saat ini masih belum mampu dipahami sehingga hanya mengetahui cara penggunaannya tanpa memahami fungsi dari media komunikasi yang digunakannya saat ini. Pengembangan media komunikasi alternatif dan augmentatif PECS didasarkan pada kondisi objektif anak dan berlandaskan kajian teori kemudian divalidasi expert judgement. Dibuktikan terdapat peningkatan pada mean level fase intervensi (B) 10,2 jika dibandingkan dengan mean level fase baseline (A1) 3 dan mean level fase baseline (A2) 11,75. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa media komunikasi alternatif dan augmentatif PECS terbukti efektif digunakan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan komunikasi kinesi anak down syndrome. ABSTRACT DEVELOPMENT OF PECS ALTERNATIVE AND AUGMENTATIVE MEDIA IN THE KINESICS COMMUNICATION SKILL OF CHILDREN WITH DOWN SYNDROME Dio Gitarama Subrata 1605157 Children with Down syndrome are individuals with special needs as a result of the conditions they experienced. In this study, children with Down syndrome aged 12 years old experiences complex communication barriers. When children communicate with their parents using communication media. But the communication that occurs between them has not been effective. Gaps that occur in factual conditions make this study adapts to research and development (R&D) approaches for determining the research steps. The aim of the research is to develop PECS alternative and augmentative communication media. Technically this research and development uses a mix method: sequential exploratory design, sequentially starting from a descriptive qualitative method to determine the objective conditions of kinesics communication skills of children with Down syndrome and the communication media that uses to communicate at this time then quantitative methods of experimental single subject research: A-B-A design to find out the effectiveness of PECS alternative and augmentative media for in improving the kinesics communication skills of children with Down syndrome. It is known from the results of qualitative analysis that the potential communication way with Down syndrome children is currently only using kinesics communication. The current communication media used by children is still not able to be understood so it only be used without knowing its function. The development of PECS alternative and augmentative communication media is based on the objective conditions of children and based on theoretical studies, and then, it was validated by experts’ judgment. It was proven that there was an increase in the mean level of the intervention phase (B) 10.2 when compared with the mean level of the baseline phase (A1) 3 and the mean level of the baseline phase (A2) 11.75. This result indicates that PECS alternative and augmentative communication media is effectively used to improve the kinesics communication skills of children with Down syndrome.
