Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh hasil-hasil penelitian yang menunjukkan beragam kemampuan berpikir aljabar SMP sehingga perlu diketahui penyebab hal tersebut salah satunya gaya belajar. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui gambaran tentang kemampuan berpikir aljabar siswa ditinjau dari gaya belajar visual, auditorial, dan kinestetik di salah satu SMP Negeri di Kota Bandung. Metodologi penelitian ini dilakukan dengan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Populasi terdiri dari 90 orang kelas VIII dan diambil 3 orang masing-masing untuk setiap gaya belajar. Instrumen penelitian ini terdiri dari angket gaya belajar, tes kemampuan berpikir aljabar, wawancara, dan studi dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa sudah memenuhi ketiga indikator yaitu strategi perhitungan berbasis konseptual, memanipulasi angka dan simbol menggunakan kaidah aljabar, dan mengungkapkan generalisasi pola dan aturan dalam konteks dunia nyata. Hasil juga menunjukkan bahwa: (1) siswa yang memiliki gaya belajar visual cenderung menjawab dengan bantuan gambar dan jawaban yang singkat; (2) siswa yang memiliki gaya belajar auditori cenderung menjawab dengan penjelasan berupa kalimat sehingga dapat memperjelas apa yang dimaksud oleh siswa; dan (3) siswa yang memiliki gaya belajar kinestetik cenderung menjawab dengan mengeksplorasi jawaban menggunakan logika umum, gerakan tangan dan coretan saat menghitung. Berdasarkan hal tersebut peneliti menyarankan agar siswa difasilitasi dengan metode atau model pembelajaran yang sesuai. ------ This research is motivated by the results of studies that show a variety of junior high school algebraic thinking abilities so that it is necessary to know the causes of this one of them is the learning style. The purpose of this study was to find out an overview of students' algebraic thinking abilities in terms of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning style in one of the state junior high schools in the city of Bandung. The methodology of this research was carried out with qualitative descriptive research. The population consisted of 90 students’ grade VIII and 3 students were taken for each learning style. The instrument of this study consisted of learning style questionnaire, algebraic thinking ability tests, interviews, and documentation study. The results showed that students had fulfilled the three indicators, namely conceptual based calculation strategies, manipulating numbers and symbols using algebraic rules, and revealed generalizations of patterns and rules in real world contexts. The results also show that: (1) students who have a visual learning style tend to answer with short answers and drawing; (2) students who have auditory learning style tend to answer with explanations in the form of sentences so that they can clarify what is meant by students; and (3) students who have kinesthetic learning style tend to answer using common sense, hand movements and math count in paper when counting. Based on this, the researcher suggested that students be facilitated with the appropriate learning method or model.
