Abstract

This study focuses on the implementation of rewards to enhance students’ motivation in English learning in one public school in Kabupaten Bandung. This study reveals the extent to which rewards are able to encourage students’ motivation in learning English and explore students’ responses to the rewards used in teaching. To meet the purposes, this study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The data were collected from classroom observation, questionnaires, and interview to students. The collected data were analyzed by using motivation valuation aspects proposed by Makmun (1996) and Jones (2009). The analysis of the study revealed that rewards are likely to improve students’ learning motivation. Specifically, the students showed some improvements on their engagement during English lessons, high frequency of verbal participation, high persistence, high self-confidence, and positive attitude direction during the learning process. In addition, the students also showed more interest in English when the teacher delivered appreciation while teaching. Based on the findings, it is recommended that rewards system can be applied in language studies to attract students’ interest and also students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation should be considered in order to minimize students’ dependence toward the rewards.;---Penelitian ini fokus pada pengimplementasian penghargaan untuk meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris di salah satu sekolah negeri di Kabupaten Bandung. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan sejauh mana penghargaan mampu mendorong motivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, penelitian ini menerapkan desain penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data diperoleh dari observasi kelas, kuisioner, dan wawancara yang dianalisis menggunakan aspek penilaian motivasi yang diadaptasi dari Makmun (1996) dan Jones (2009). Analisis penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penghargaan cenderung meningkatkan motivasi belajar siswa. Secara khusus, siswa menunjukkan beberapa peningkatan, seperti pada keterlibatan mereka saat belajar, partisipasi verbal yang tinggi, persistensi, kepercayaan diri, dan arah sikap positif selama mengikuti pelajaran. Selain itu, siswa juga lebih menunjukkan keminatan mengikuti pelajaran bahasa Inggris ketika guru mengaplikasikan penghargaan saat belajar. Berdasarkan hasil penemuan, direkomendasikan bahwa sistem penghargaan dapat diterapkan dalam studi bahasa untuk menarik minat siswa, selain itu motivasi intrinsik dan ekstrinsik siswa harus dipertimbangkan dalam penggunaan sistem penghargaan untuk meminimalkan ketergantungan siswa terhadap penghargaan.
