Abstract

This study investigates the teaching methods and approaches in three public senior high schools in a regency in Riau. It also intends to figure out the factors influencing the selection of the methods and approaches. This study employed a qualitative case study design and involved three English teachers. The data were obtained from classroom observations, interviews, and documents. In analysing the data, the classroom activity was recorded, transcribed, and coded to find out the teaching approaches and methods used by the teachers and the factors that influence in selecting teaching methods and approaches. The findings indicated that the teachers used Grammar-Translation Method, Communicative Approach, and Genre-Based Approach as their teaching methods and approaches. The teachers combined all of these teaching methods and approaches in their classroom. Thus, they employed an eclectic method and approach. In addition, it was also found that there were four factors that influenced the teachers’ selections of the teaching methods. The factors were (1) the government, (2) school, (3) teacher, and (4) students. This study recommends future studies to conduct investigation on the recent teaching methods and approaches in more detail and on the other factors that influence the selection of the teaching methods and approaches that have not been discussed in this study.-----Penelitian ini meneliti tentang metode dan pendekatan mengajar di salah satu Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri di sebuah kabupaten di Riau. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi guru dalam memilih metode dan pendekatan pembelajaran. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan menggunakan studi kasus dan melibatkan tiga guru bahasa Inggris. Data penelitian diperoleh dari penelitian di dalam ruang kelas, wawancara, dan dokumen yang berkaitan dengan penelitian ini. Dalam menganalisa data penelitian, kegiatan di dalam kelas direkam, ditranskripsi, dan di pilah sesuai dengan pertanyaan di dalam penilitian ini untuk menemukan jawaban yang sesuai dengan pertanyaan di dalam penelitian ini yaitu tentang metode dan pendekatan pembelajaran yang digunakan oleh guru serta faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi guru dalam menggunakan metode dan pendekatan tersebut di dalam pembelajaran. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri menggunakan Grammar-Translation Method, Communicative Approach, and Genre-Based Approach sebagai metode dan pendekatan dalam mengajar. Mereka mengkombinasikan penggunakkan metode dan pendekatan tersebut di dalam kelas. Oleh karena itu, bisa dikatakan bahwa mereka menggunakan an eclectic method and approach. Selain itu, disimpulkan juga bahwa ada empat faktor yang mempengaruhi guru dalam menggunakan metode dan pendekatan pengajaran tersebut, yaitu pemerintah, sekolah, guru, dan siswa-siswa. Penelitian ini mengarahkan kepada penelitian yang selanjutnya untuk mengadakan penelitian tentang metode dan pendekatan mengajar yang digunakan oleh guru pada saat ini dengan lebih detail, dan juga menyarankan untuk melihat faktor-faktor lain yang mempengaruhi penggunaan metode dan pendekatan pembelajaran yang belum didiskusikan dalam penelitian ini.
