Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memperoleh profil model mental siswa pada materi hidrolisis garam. Subjek penelitian ini adalah enam orang siswa kelas XII MIPA di salah satu SMA Negeri di Kota Bandung. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif dengan instrumen penelitian berupa Tes Diagnostik Model Mental – Interview About Event (TDM-IAE). Dalam penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa siswa kemampuan tinggi, sedang dan rendah lebih mudah menjelaskan level makroskopik, tetapi kesulitan dalam menjelaskan level submikroskopik, simbolik serta mempertautkan ketiga level representasi kimia pada materi hidrolisis garam. Hasil penelitian berupa jawaban siswa dibuat pola tertentu sehingga diperoleh profil model mental siswa. Berdasarkan pola tersebut, profil model mental siswa pada materi hidrolisis garam tergolong tipe jawaban benar sebagian setelah diberikan pertanyaan probing dan tipe jawaban salah. Pada umumnya siswa kemampuan tinggi, sedang dan rendah mengetahui keadaan ion-ion H3O+ / OH- dalam masing-masing larutan garam. Namun, mereka kesulitan dalam menghubungkan keadaan ion-ion tersebut dengan peristiwa pergeseran kesetimbangan. Hanya satu siswa kemampuan sedang dan satu siswa kemampuan rendah yang dapat menjelaskan konsep tersebut, sementara itu dua siswa kemampuan tinggi memahaminya setelah diberikan pertanyaan probing. Selanjutnya, empat dari enam siswa dapat menghitung pH larutan garam dengan benar setelah diberikan pertanyaan probing melalui penurunan rumus, sedangkan satu siswa kemampuan sedang lainnya hanya sampai pada konsentrasi ion-ion, serta satu siswa kemampuan rendah lainnya menggunakan rumus pH larutan garam dan jawaban yang diperoleh salah. Baik siswa kemampuan tinggi, sedang, dan rendah tidak menyertai fasa zat saat menuliskan persamaan reaksi hidrolisis garam.-----The aim of this research is to obtain student’s mental models of salt hydrolysis. This research was conducted at a senior high school in Bandung involving six students in XII MIPA class with three different level of ability. The method used in this research was descriptive method with Model Mental Diagnostic Test - Interview About Event (MMTD-IAE) as the research instrument. Based on this research, all of the students’ could explain the macroscopic level easily, but they had difficulty in explaining submicroscopic, symbolic level, and connection between the three levels of chemical representation in salt hydrolysis. Students’ mental model was obtained from the pattern of students’ response during the interview. The results show that the majority of students’ mental model of salt hydrolysis were categorized as wrong type and partially correct type response after being given probe questions. All of the six students knows about the H3O+/OH- ions’ state on each of salt solution. However, they have difficulty to find the connection between ions’ state and equilibrium shifting phenomenon. Only one medium ability and one low ability subjects could explain it correctly, while two high ability subjects could explain it only after being given probe questions. Furthermore, four out of six students could calculate the pH of salt solution correctly based on the concept after being given probe questions. Meanwhile, one medium ability subject only can calculate until get ions concentration value, and one low ability subject only can calculate the pH using generic equation and did not get the correct answer. All of the students’ did not write the phase of substance while writing the salt hydrolysis equation.
