    Abstract

    Banyak permasalahan akademik dikaitkan dengan fear of failure dan strategi self-handicapping. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat pengaruh fear of failure terhadap self-handicapping dengan peran self-compassion sebagai mediator. Partisipan (N= 370, dengan beragam jenis kelamin, fakultas, tahun angkatan, dan urutan kelahiran) mengisi kuesioner yang berisi instrumen The Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory (PFAI), Self-Handicapping Scale (SHS), dan Self-Compassion Scale (SCS). Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah causal mediation analysis. Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan fear of failure dapat memprediksi self-handicapping. Self-compassion juga ditemukan berfungsi sebagai mediator dengan kategori partial mediation. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa menurunnya self-compassion dapat menyebabkan individu dengan fear of failure melakukan self-handicapping.;---Many academic problems related to fear of failure and self-handicapping strategy. This study examined the effect of fear of failure on self-handicapping; as well as the role of self-compassion as the mediator. Participants (N = 370, by various sex, faculty, batch on year of entering university, and birth order) completed The Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory (PFAI), Self-Handicapping Scale, and Self-Compassion Scale (SCS). Analyses using Causal Mediation Analysis revealed significant effect of fear of failure on self-handicapping. The study also found that effect of fear of failure on self handicapping was partially mediated by self-compassion. Therefore, decreasing self-compassion leads people with fear of failure experience self-handicapping.
