Abstract
The study entitled “Understanding Students’ Emotion through Their Narrative Reproduction of Short Stories” aimed to investigate the students’ emotions expressed as evidence in the narrative reproduction. Qualitative case study was employed with two instruments namely pictorial and written documents and interview. The subjects involved four eleventh grade students of senior high school in Bandung. All collected data were analyzed based on the theory of visual grammar proposed by Gunther Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006). The findings show that the students have different intensities of gradation in emotions of sympathy and empathy. Positioning themselves as a subject in the story, the students expressed their emotion as self- discovery. They also reveal their emotion to another character in which it leads the students to immerse the character and sympathize towards others. It can be seen from the composition of their drawings including the perspective, size of frame, distance, speech balloons, image act and gaze. The students’ personal backgrounds have affected the way the emotion expressed in the evidence.
