Abstract
In Japanese, there are three different types of letters that is not used in Indonesian; those are kanji, hiragana, katakana. One of those three types of letters, which is Kanji, has the biggest amount of letter that makes it hard to remember all of them. Also, a single kanji can have more than one pronunciation, and most kanji is made from more than two strokes, which makes them a challenge in learning Japanese. Based on that problem, author had modified a card game as a way to learn to remember reading kanji using a type of card that is popular among the young people, UNO card. This card especially been modified with kanji that would likely be found in Nihongo Nouryoku Shiken N4. This experiment used comparative technique, which is a technique used to find the difference from two different variables. The design used in this experiment is Nonequivalent Control Group Design. Using this design, there were two groups that bore different tasks. One group is served as the control group, while the other one is the experimental group. The sample was the freshmen classes of Japanese Language Education Department from FPBS UPI, year 2014/2015. The experimental group was 13 person, and the control group were 14 person. As the result of the experiment, after treatment, the experimental group average score was 37.77, and for the control group was 30.78. Using comparative statistic, the t-score for posttest was 3.55. With df at 26, the t-distribution was 2.78. Here we can conclude that in post-test after treatments the result is t-score>t-distribution (3.55>2.78). It shows that there is a significant difference between the group whom was learning kanji using UNO game with modified card and the group whom was not using this technique. And also, judging from the questionnaire result, the group who used UNO game for their kanji learning found it thrilling and fun to learn kanji this way and it helps them to remember how to read kanji.
