Abstract

To meet the challenges of adapting into the life in the global society and the continues changing-world at this point, everyone is required to have the abilities and the skills needed in the 21st century, such as: problem solving and critical thinking, entrepreneurship, and creativity. One of the fundamental problems encountered in learning activities at the high school is the lack of critical thinking skills of the students in the learning process. Improve critical thinking skills is considered very important that students are able and accustomed to dealing with various real problems. This study aims to determine the influence of the usage of problem solving methods with means-ends analysis (MEA) techniques to the critical thinking abilities of the students as compared to conventional learning methods as commonly done by teachers on economic subjects in Grade XI of social studies at SMA Negeri 4 Bandung. The method used in this study was a quasi-experimental research on the subjects as intact groups, where the class of XI IIS 2 was referred to as experimental group and the class of XI IIS 3 was referred to as control group. Treatment (X) in the experimental group using the problem solving methods with means-ends analysis techniques, whereas treatment in the control group using conventional learning methods. Each groups were given an early tests/pre-test (O1) and final tests/post-test (O2) in order to determine the differences in improvement of critical thinking abilities of the students at the point before and after the course of treatment (X) or learning process. These results showed that there was an increasing in critical thinking abilities of the students (variable Y) in class that uses the problem solving methods with means-ends analysis techniques (variable X). Moreover, there were differences in the improvement of critical thinking abillities of the students, where the gain index of the experimental class could be classified in the middle criteria while the gain index of the control class was classified in the low criteria. Based on these results, it could be concluded that the usage of problem solving methods with means-ends analysis techniques in the learning process is quite effective to improve critical thinking abilities of the students. ----------Untuk memenuhi tantangan beradaptasi dengan kehidupan di tengah masyarakat global dan dunia yang terus mengalami perubahan pada saat ini, setiap orang dituntut untuk memiliki kemampuan dan keterampilan yang dibutuhkan di abad ke-21 seperti pemecahan masalah dan berpikir kritis serta kewirausahaan dan kreativitas. Salah satu persoalan mendasar yang dihadapi dalam kegiatan pembelajaran di sekolah lanjutan tingkat atas adalah rendahnya kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa dalam proses pembelajaran. Meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis dipandang sangat penting agar siswa mampu dan terbiasa menghadapi berbagai permasalahan di sekitarnya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan metode problem solving (pemecahan masalah) dengan teknik means-ends analysis (MEA) terhadap kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa dibandingkan dengan metode pembelajaran konvensional (ceramah) seperti yang biasa dilakukan oleh guru pada mata pelajaran ekonomi kelas XI IIS di SMA Negeri 4 Bandung. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kuasi eksperimen dengan subyek kelompok utuh (intact group), yaitu kelas XI IIS 2 sebagai kelompok eksperimen dan kelas XI IIS 3 sebagai kelompok kontrol. Perlakuan (X) pada kelompok eksperimen menggunakan metode pembelajaran problem solving dengan teknik means-ends analysis, sedangkan perlakuan pada kelompok kontrol menggunakan metode pembelajaran konvensional (ceramah). Sebelum dan sesudah diberi perlakuan, masing-masing kelompok diberikan tes awal/pre-test (O1) dan tes akhir/post-test (O2) guna mengetahui perbedaan peningkatan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa sebelum dan sesudah diberikan perlakuan atau proses pembelajaran. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa (variabel Y) di kelas yang menggunakan metode problem solving dengan teknik means-ends analysis (variabel X). Selain itu, terdapat perbedaan peningkatan (gain) kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa dimana indeks gain pada kelas eksperimen termasuk dalam kriteria sedang, sedangkan indeks gain pada kelas kontrol termasuk dalam kriteria rendah. Berdasarkan hal tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan metode problem solving dengan teknik means-ends analysis dalam proses pembelajaran cukup efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa.
