Abstract

---------- This study examines sound changes and proto-form of a number of Javanese dialects in Indonesia, especially in Java Island. The objects of this study are six Javanese dialects: Cilegon Javanese dialect, Cirebon Javanese dialect, Cilacap Javanese dialect, Yogyakarta Javanese dialect, Malang Javanese dialect and Surabaya Javanese dialect. The data were taken from participants that consist of six men above 40 years old from each dialect. The participants were interviewed and asked to translate 200 Swadesh list words into Javanese. From the Swadesh list, the cognate to analyze sound changes and proto-forms was formed. The data were then analyzed using a comparative method theory proposed by Crowley (1997). The data analysis of the study uses Crowley’s (1997) theory about sound changes and proto-form and also supported with Campbell’s (1999). The findings show that the most frequent type of sound changes that happen in the cognate is vowel lowering and the proto-form results mostly come from dialects in East Java. ----------
