Abstract
Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh permasalahan yang ditemukan peneliti pada saat observasi awal di kelas VIII-4 SMP Negeri 1 Bandung. Berdasarkan hasil observasi, peneliti menemukan permasalahan yaitu peserta didik kurang memiliki kemampuan berpikir kritis dalam pembelajaran IPS. Hal ini ditunjukan dengan beberapa indikator permasalahan diantaranya kurang aktifnya peserta didik saat pembelajaran di kelas. Ketika siswa bertanya, pertanyaan yang diajukan hanya sebatas pada tataran ingatan, siswa juga belum mampu menjawab pertanyaan dari guru menggunakan analisisnya sendiri, mereka hanya terpaku kepada buku teks. Alternatif pemecahan masalah yang menjadi pilihan peneliti yaitu dengan menerapkan metode tanya jawab dengan teknik probing-prompting, dimana guru memberikan serangkaian pertanyaan untuk membangkitkan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa. Meninjau permasalahan yang akan diteliti berkaitan dengan proses pembelajaran, maka peneliti memilih Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) dengan model Kemmis Mc. Taggart yang dilakukan dalam 4 siklus. Peningkatan keterampilan berpikir kritis peserta didik di kelas VIII-4 SMP Negeri 1 Bandung melalui metode tanya jawab dengan teknik probing-prompting dapat dikatakan berhasil. Berhasilnya penelitian ini dilihat dari adanya peningkatan kuantitas dan kualitas keterampilan berpikir kritis peserta didik yang ditunjukkan melalui perkembangan aspek-aspek atau beberapa indikator keterampilan berpikir kritis. Berdasarkan data hasil penelitian, seluruh aspek dari keterampilan berpikir kritis yang dikembangkan mengalami peningkatan dari siklus pertama hingga siklus keempat. Dari kualitas cukup, baik, hingga sangat baik. Indikator keterampilan berpikir kritis yang masuk ke dalam kategori sangat baik adalah indikator merumuskan pertanyaan, aktif dalam menjawab pertanyaan dari guru, menjawab pertanyaan dengan menggunakan kalimat sendiri, jawaban yang diberikan diperkuat dengan argumen yang jelas, dan kalimat yang digunakan dapat di mengerti. Kesimpulannya bahwa metode tanya jawab dengan teknik probing-prompting dapat meningkatkan keterampilan berpikir kritis siswa. ---------- This research is motivated by the problems the researcher founf at the time of preliminary observations in class VIII-4 SMP Negeri 1 Bandung. Based on the observations, the researcher found problems that the students lack the critical thinking skills in social studies subject (IPS). This is proven by several indicators of problems including the inactivity of learners when learning in the classroom. When students ask questions merely at the level of memory, students are also not able to answer questions from the teacher using their own analysis, they simply followed the textbook. Alternative solutions of the problem chosen by the researcher is to apply the method of question and answer with the probing-prompting technique, where the teacher gives a series of questions to arouse students' critical thinking skills. Reviewing the problems to be studied with regard to the learning process, the researcher chose a Class Action Research (PTK) with Kemmis Mc Taggart models done in four cycles. Improving the critical thinking skills of students in class VIII-4 SMP Negeri 1 Bandung through the question and answer method by prompting probing- technique was successful. The accomplishment of this study can be seen from the quantity and quality improvements of students’ critical thinking skill which is shown through the development of the aspects or several indicators of critical thinking skills. Based on the research findings, all aspects of developed critical thinking skills encounter the improvement from the first cycle to the fourth cycle, from the quality of fair, good, to excellent. Critical thinking skill indicators in the excellent category are the indicators of formulating the questions, being active in answering teacher’s questions, answering the questions by using their own words, giving the answers which are reinforced by the clear arguments and using the understandable sentences. Therefore, it can be concluded that using the question-answer session method through probing-prompting technique can improve students’ critical thinking skill.
