Abstract
This research is motivated by the low skills of reading aloud and reading comprehension of students. The purpose of this study was to describe the effectiveness of Steinberg method with the Big Book to reading aloud skill and reading comprehension skill. The method used in this study was a quasi experimental design with the nonrandomized control group, pretest-posttest with two groups: the experimental class and control class. In the experiment class was given treatment using Steinberg with the Big Book, while the control class using conventional methods.The results showed differences in the skills of reading aloud and reading comprehension between the two classes. In the control class that uses conventional methods tend to not experience a significant increase, while the post-test in the experimental class skills of reading aloud and reading comprehension increased. Based on the analysis of data in the experimental class, the average value of the current reading aloud skills pretest to post-test by 65 to 92, an increase in 27 (41.54%). While the average value of reading comprehension skills pretest to post-test by 49 to 72, an increase in 23 (46.94%). The result of the analysis indicates that Steinberg method with Big Book effectively used to improve the skills of reading aloud and reading comprehension. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh rendahnya keterampilan membaca nyaring dan membaca pemahaman siswa. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan keefektifan metode Steinberg dengan Big Book terhadap keterampilan membaca nyaring dan membaca pemahaman. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah eksperimen kuasi dengan desain the nonrandomized control group, pratest–posttest dengan dua kelompok yaitu kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol. Pada kelas eksperimen diberikan perlakuan menggunakan metode Steinberg dengan Big Book, sedangkan pada kelas kontrol menggunakan metode konvensional. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya perbedaan keterampilan membaca nyaring dan membaca pemahaman antara kedua kelas. Pada kelas kontrol yang menggunakan metode konvensional cenderung tidak mengalami peningkatan yang signifikan, sedangkan pada pascaperlakuan pada kelas eksperimen terjadi peningkatan keterampilan membaca nyaring dan membaca pemahaman. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data pada kelas eksperimen, nilai rata-rata keterampilan membaca nyaring saat prates 65 pascaperlakuan menjadi 92, terjadi peningkatan 27 (41,54%). Sedangkan nilai rata-rata keterampilan membaca pemahaman prates sebesar 49 pascaperlakuan menjadi 72, terjadi peningkatan 23 (46.94%). Hasil analisis data tersebut mengindikasikan bahwa metode Steinberg dengan Big Book efektif digunakan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan membaca nyaring dan membaca pemahaman.
