Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui penggunaan metode grammar dan penerjemahan dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca para siswa. Penelitian ini mengacu kepada Grammar-Translation Method (GTM) untuk membantu siswa membaca dan memahami literatur sebagai fokus utama dari keseluruhan kegiatan pembelajaran bahasa. Teknik pengumpulan datanya adalah pre-tes dan pos-tes dan juga kuesioner. Teknik-teknik tersebut diterapkan kepada partisipan penelitian yaitu para siswa kelas XI di satu Sekolah Menengah Atas di Bogor. Para siswa kelas XI IIS 3 adalah grup eksperimental, sedangkan para siswa yang duduk dikelas XI IIS 1 adalah grup kontrol. Hasil rata-rata dari pos-tes eksperimental grup adalah 91.48 dimana nilai ini lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan rata-rata pre-tes yaitu 74.25. Hasil t-test menunjukkan nilai t hitung adalah 6.84005 sedangkan nilai t tabel adalah 2.045 di level signifikansi 0.05 dan dk 29. Dengan kata lain, terdapat perbedaan signifikan dari rata-rata yang diperoleh grup experimental sebelum dan sesudah diterapkannya metode tersebut. Respon positif juga terlihat dari jawaban kuesioner. Para siswa menemukan bahwa kegiatan pembelajaran dengan menerjemah dan pembahasan grammar dapat membantu selama proses pemahaman teks bahasa Inggris. This study aims to discover the use of grammar and translating in teaching English to develop students’ reading skills. This study takes cue from the Grammar-Translation Method (GTM) in order to help the students read and comprehend the literature as the main focus of the language practice throughout the whole session. The data collection techniques are the administration of pre-test and post-test as well as questionnaire. Those techniques were employed to the participant of the study which is the students of XI grade of one Senior High School in Bogor. The students of Class XI IIS 3 is the experimental group, meanwhile those who attend Class XI IIS 1 is the control group for this study. The mean of post-test of the experimental group is 91.48 which is greater than the mean of pre-test which is 74.25. The t-test shows that the obtained value for t is 6.84005 meanwhile the t critical is 2.045 at the significance level of 0.05 and the df is 29. In other words, there is a significant difference of mean obtained by the experimental group before and after the treatment. The positive responses also revealed through the questionnaire’s answers. The students found that the translation and grammar preview are helpful during the process of comprehending English text.
