Abstract
Research to develop an Argumentative Skills Oriented School Physics Course Program (PPFS-BKB) for prospective physics teacher was conducted using R & D design. The need analysis was conducted in the define phase, while design phase is based on literature studies and field studies, and the develop phase was conducted PPFS-BKB drafting, experts validation, and limited trials. The result of improvements of PPFS-BKB draft implemented in extensive trials using quasi experimental methode with pretest-posttest control group design. Research subjects are students in the Department of Physics Education at one LPTK in Bandung which is contracting with subjects Physics School in odd semester of the academic year 2012/2013 consisting of 26 students of the experimental class and the control class of 24 students. Quantitative data was collected using argumentative skills test and concepts understanding test instruments. On the other hand, qualitative data were collected through interviews, observational sheets, and attitude scale instruments. The results of development obtained PPFS-BKB has a syntax that consists of four characteristic stages, namely: (1) identification of the problem, (2) generation of tentative arguments, (3) the argumentation session, and (4) writing arguments. The results of extensive tests PPFS-BKB implementation shows the improvement of argumentative skills in experimental class students were higher than the control class. The improvement of argumentative skills engaging in all the argumentative elements. The improvement of concept understanding in experimental class students were higher than the control class. The Improvement of concept understanding occurs in all aspects. There is a strong correlation between the improvement of students’ concept understanding and the improvement of students’ argumentative skills. In conclusion, PPFS-BKB implementation is more effective in improving the prospective physics teachers’ argumentative skills and concepts understanding compared to conventional learning. PPFS-BKB implementation got positive responses from both faculty members and students. PPFS-BKB are able to help students understand the school physics concepts, cultivate the habit of ctitical and logical thinking, the arguments construction, construct knowledge through the scientific community in collaboration, and develop a responsibility to learn.
