    Abstract

This study aims to develop cognitive and psychomotor test instruments for the topic of maintenance and repair of engine cooling systems, based on a custom-built simulator. The background of this research is Assessment in the topic of engine cooling systems within vocational education is still largely procedural and lacks contextual relevance. Practical media such as engine stands have limitations in visualizing system processes. Therefore, this study developed an Arduino-based simulator and cognitive-psychomotor test instruments to support a more representative evaluation aligned with learning outcomes and industry competency standards. The research employed the 4D development model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate), limited to the Develop stage. The cognitive instrument was constructed in the form of multiple-choice questions to assess students’ understanding of the principles, functions, components, and working mechanisms of engine cooling systems. The psychomotor instrument was developed based on real procedural steps in performing maintenance and repair tasks using a simulator integrated with Arduino-based sensors and components. Instrument validation involved ten experts, consisting of certified automotive technicians, an automotive practitioner, and a lecturer in vehicle technology. The results show that the cognitive instrument has strong content validity, construct validity, and reliability. The Content Validity Index (CVI) reached 0.983, indicating that the items are suitable for use. The psychomotor instrument also demonstrated strong content validity based on expert review. In conclusion, the developed instruments are deemed appropriate for use in evaluating students’ competence in engine cooling system maintenance, supporting both competency testing and vocational higher education learning activities.
