    Abstract

This study aims to formulate design criteria for special elementary schools (SDLB) for blind students through a behavioral approach. The research employed place-centered mapping and qualitative observation methods, conducted at SLB Tunas Harapan Palaran (Bu Susi’s class) and SLB Negeri Tenggarong (Netrasi’s class). The findings reveal that the behavior of blind students is influenced by sensory limitations, the need for stimulation, and their orientation and mobility skills. Distinct behavioral patterns were identified, including preferences for certain areas, avoidance of specific spaces, dominant activities, as well as disruptive behaviors and the occurrence of blindism. Another significant finding is the use of multisensory strategies, such as sensitivity to surface textures, responsiveness to sound quality, and reliance on the sense of smell to identify rooms through distinctive scents. These factors were found to be espsential in fostering a sense of safety, improving concentration, and supporting social interaction. The main contribution of this research is the formulation of SDLB classroom design criteria for blind students, grounded in universal design principles and user behavior. These criteria emphasize spatial order, safe circulation, controlled lighting and auditory comfort, along with inclusive facilities such as tactile guides, texture differentiation, and distinctive scents for orientation. Thus, the study provides a conceptual foundation for developing inclusive and adaptive classrooms tailored to the specific needs of blind students.
