Abstract
Riffs and runs are prominent vocal techniques in popular music, characterized by rapid, melodic sequences that demand vocal control, flexibility, and expressive interpretation. This study aims to analyze the process by which fifth- and seventh-semester students in the Music Education Study Program at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia achieve proficiency in riffs and runs. The study is motivated by the importance of mastering these techniques for vocal agility, expressiveness, and creativity, while formal music education has yet to provide a systematic approach to learning them. The research focuses on students’ learning processes, training methods, challenges faced, and strategies employed. Findings indicate that many students acquire riffs and runs primarily through self-directed learning via popular media, highlighting the need for pedagogical reflection to bridge the gap between professional practice and formal instruction, thereby enhancing graduates’ technical and artistic competence. The results are expected to contribute to the development of a more personalized and creative vocal curriculum and provide a foundation for effective learning strategies for advanced vocal improvisation skills.
