    Abstract

    Anak tunarungu mengalami hambatan dalam menyusun kalimat secara lengkap, runtut, dan sesuai struktur karena keterbatasan dalam mendengar dan memahami bahasa lisan. Akibatnya, banyak anak tunarungu mengalami kesulitan dalam ekpresi tulis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh media Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) terhadap kemampuan menyusun kalimat anak tunarungu. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain one group pretest-posttest. Subjek penelitian adalah lima orang siswa tunarungu kelas 8 dan 9 di SLB BC YPNI Pameungpeuk. Instrumen penelitian berupa tes tulis menyusun kalimat yang disusun berdasarkan indikator struktur kalimat sederhana dan keenam fase PECS. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes sebelum dan sesudah penerapan media PECS, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan uji Wilcoxon Signed-Rank dengan bantuan program SPSS 31. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan peningkatan nilai rata-rata dari 62,5 menjadi 80, dengan nilai signifikansi 0,039 (p < 0,05). Artinya, terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan antara penggunaan media PECS dan kemampuan menyusun kalimat siswa. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah bahwa PECS efektif digunakan dalam pembelajaran bahasa untuk anak tunarungu. Implikasi dari hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa PECS dapat diimplementasikan secara lebih luas sebagai media pembelajaran alternatif yang berbasis visual dan interaktif di SLB. Deaf students often face difficulties in constructing complete, coherent, and grammatically correct sentences due to limitations in hearing and understanding spoken language. As a result, many deaf students struggle with written expression. This study aims to examine the effect of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) on the sentence construction skills of deaf students. The research employed a quantitative approach using a one-group pretest-posttest design. The participants were five deaf students from grades 8 and 9 at SLB BC YPNI Pameungpeuk. The research instrument consisted of a written test on sentence construction, developed based on indicators of simple sentence structure and the six phases of PECS. Data were collected through tests administered before and after the implementation of PECS and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test with the assistance of SPSS version 31. The results showed an increase in the average score from 62.5 to 80, with a significance value of 0.039 (p < 0.05). This indicates a significant effect of using PECS media on students’ sentence construction abilities. It can be concluded that PECS is effective in supporting language learning for deaf students. The implications of this study suggest that PECS can be more widely implemented as a visual and interactive alternative learning medium in special education schools.
