    Abstract

Writing is one of significant productive language skills in academic settings, especially for English language education students in meeting academic tasks, such as essays, research proposals, and undergraduate thesis. However, for EFL students, academic writing is considered challenging because of the gap between academic expectations and students’ actual writing skills related to unfamiliarity with academic writing format and insufficient language background in the target language, which emerge foreign language writing anxiety. Therefore, this study aims to explore the voices of EFL students on foreign language writing anxiety experience and coping strategies to maintain the writing process. This study used a qualitative method through a case study involving sophomore EFL students enrolled in Writing for Academic Purposes II course. Data were collected through the Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) questionnaire by Cheng (2004), semi-structured interviews, and documents analysis. The findings showed that the participants mainly indicated moderate anxiety with predominant cognitive anxiety, implying anxiety is natural yet significant in the academic writing process. Furthermore, anxiety factors identified are multifaceted including low self-confidence, fear of negative evaluation, perfectionism, negative experience, academic writing format, discouraging environment, and time pressure. Apparently, foreign language writing anxiety is not always debilitative but can also be facilitative, where students' perceptions as writers and responses to anxiety act as determinants beyond students' anxiety level. Frequently used strategies included preparation which focuses on writing management, and peer-seeking that acts as social support, both used in parallel as problem-focused strategies which directly contribute to students' writing process.
