Abstract

Sejarah panjang animasi berawal dari penemuan alat-alat ilusi optik yang menjadi alternatif awal dalam penayangan gambar. Penemuan ini menginspirasi J.Stuart Blackton untuk memproduksi film animasi pertama di dunia di tahun 1906 dengan teknik stop motion. Perkembangan film animasi terus berlanjut hingga datang puncaknya yaitu era keemasan animasi yang dimulai oleh Walt Disney. Sebagai pionir industri animasi, Walt Disney menginovasi film animasi panjang berwarna pertama di dunia, yang memantik masuknya animasi ke Indonesia. Sampai saat ini, industri film animasi di Indonesia lebih dominan menggunakan teknik digital seperti computer-based 3D dan frame-by-frame 2D dibanding teknik tradisional seperti stop motion. Stop motion adalah teknik animasi dengan pengambilan gambar pada objek gerak secara frame-by-frame sehingga menghasilkan ilusi pergerakan. Teknik stop motion dapat diproduksi dengan berbagai jenis media sebagai objek animasinya. Salah satunya media kertas pada paper cut-out stop motion, yang sudah digunakan sejak penayangan animasi feature pertama karya Lotte Reiniger, ‘The Adventure of Prince Achmed’. Teknik ini jarang dieksplorasi dalam film animasi lokal disamping memilki potensi visualisasi film animasi yang menarik. Berdasarkan latar belakang tersebut, penciptaan ini fokus pada eksplorasi teknik paper cut-out stop motion sebagai aplikasi teknik pada film animasi pendek 2D ‘Desa yang Serakah’ dengan memadukan Teori The Hero’s Journey dalam penyusunan alur cerita sekaligus mengangkat fenomena pengkultusan. Metode yang digunakan meliputi studi literatur dan eksperimen kreatif melalui proses pra-pro-pasca produksi dalam menghasilkan penciptaan berupa film animasi pendek yang memadukan teknik paper cut-out stop motion dengan teori The Hero’s Journey dengan tujuan kritik sosial dan hiburan. The history of animation began with the discovery of optical illusion devices, which became an early alternative to present images. The finding then motivated J.Stuart Blackton on creating the world’s first animated film in 1906 using the stop motion technique. The evolution of animated films continued until it reached its pinnacle, the golden age of animation. This era was inaugurated by the pioneer of the animation industry, Walt Disney. Walt Disney then developed the world’s first colored feature animation which encouraged the arrival of animated film to Indonesia. Until date, Indonesia’s animation industry has been dominated by digital techniques rather than traditional approaches such as stop motion. Stop motion is one of the animation techniques that uses frame-by-frame image captures to achieve the illusion of movement. This technique can be used with variety of media as the animated object. One of the examples is using paper as the media, or known as paper cut-out stop motion, which has been utilized since the premiere of Lotte Reiniger’s The Adventure of Prince Achmed, the first feature animation in the world. Paper cut-out stop motion technique is rarely used in local animated films, despite its posibility on presenting an intriguing visual. Based on this background, this production explores the paper cut-out stop motion technique for a short 2D animated film ‘Desa yang Serakah’ which incoporated The Hero’s Journey into the narrative structure while also presenting the phenomenon of cult. Literature studies and several creative experiments (pre-pro-post production) was used as throughout the production, to achieve the final outcome of a short animated film which utilized paper cut-out stop motion technique and The Hero’s Journey perspective to promote social criticism, and entertainment.
