Abstract

This study investigates the Indonesian English linguistic features used by characters in the film Foxtrot Six (2019), focusing on the social meanings they convey within the narrative. It adopts the theoretical framework of Indonesian English proposed by Aziz (2003) and Endarto (2024), supported by works on English varieties in Southeast Asia, including Hickey (2005), Kachru and Nelson (2011), and Kirkpatrick (2010). The analysis centres on lexical, syntactic, and discourse features used by the main character, Angga, and other characters interacting with him to perform social roles, express identity, and navigate interpersonal dynamics. Drawing on sociolinguistic theories of language and identity (Bucholtz & Hall, 2005), style and register (Holmes & Wilson, 2022), and indexicality (Silverstein, 2003), the study treats language as a resource for constructing social meaning in fictional discourse. A qualitative case study approach was employed, using content analysis of transcripts of Angga's dialogues with his interlocutors from the film. The findings reveal that syntactic features are the most prominent, with 31 instances, accounting for 46.97% of the total 66 findings, followed by lexical and discourse features. This prominence suggests that structural patterns in Indonesian English, particularly the omission of articles, simplification of tense usage, and omission of auxiliary verbs, play a key role in signalling local identity and shaping the rhythm and tone of interaction. The use of Indonesian English reflects localized variation. It conveys social meanings related to hybrid identities (e.g., navigating between local and global values), politeness norms, and cultural ambivalence toward Western influence. These linguistic features show how Indonesian English in the film carries important social meanings. They reveal how people in Indonesia manage their cultural identities and social relationships while balancing local traditions and global influences.
