    Abstract

Reading comprehension is a vital skill in second language acquisition, and the process requires the readers to engage with the text actively. Prior research has shown that metacognition has a positive relationship with reading comprehension. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the awareness of metacognitive reading strategies among EFL students with high reading proficiency. The present study employed a case study design with 14 participants from a university in West Java. MARSI-R questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The results of the study indicated that most of the students were highly aware of metacognitive reading strategies in their academic reading process and have diverse metacognitive knowledge of various reading strategies. The students tended to rely on support reading strategies, followed by problem-solving strategies, and were less aware of global reading strategies. The strategies they recognized the most from each category include previewing the text, re-reading, and highlighting information. Meanwhile, the strategies that they were least aware of from each category include using typographical aids, getting back on track when sidetracked, and reading aloud. The findings of this study suggested the need for more explicit instruction on metacognitive strategies, specifically global reading techniques, to enhance the students’ metacognitive knowledge of reading strategies and become strategic readers.
