    Abstract

Kata kunci: Anxiety, competitive anxiety, performa atlet Introduction: Competitive anxiety is a form of anxiety experienced by athletes when facing competitive situations, affecting their performance cognitively, affectively, somatically, and motorically. This study aims to analyze the competitive anxiety experienced by field hockey athletes before and after a match. Methods: The study employed a case study approach involving two field hockey athletes from Bandung City who participated in the Bandung Hockey Festival on December 6, 2024. Research instruments included observation checklists and interview guides. Data were collected through direct observation and structured interviews. Results: Research findings indicate that prior to competing, hockey athletes experience an increase in competitive anxiety, characterized by dominant symptoms in the cognitive, somatic, affective, and motor aspects. After competition, a difference in response was observed between the two athletes, where the more experienced athlete was able to significantly decrease their level of competitive anxiety compared to the novice athlete. This difference demonstrates that experience and emotional regulation abilities play a crucial role in determining how athletes cope with competitive pressure. In general, competitive anxiety is influenced by internal factors such as competition experience, motivation, and self-confidence as well as external factors such as social support, environmental pressure, and referee decisions. Discussion: Competitive anxiety is affected by both internal and external factors. These findings align with previous research emphasizing the role of mental toughness in reducing competitive anxiety. Athletes who are better able to manage stress and emotions tend to maintain optimal performance under competitive pressure. However, anxiety does not always exert a negative effect, provided it can be controlled and integrated with effective coping strategies. Suggestion: Future research is recommended to involve a larger number of participants with diverse ages and experience levels to obtain more representative results. Keywords: Anxiety, competitive anxiety, athlete performance.
