Abstract
This research, entitled “AWIKAI: Exploration of Irregular Meters in Music Composition for Bamboo Ensemble”, focuses on creating an original musical work by utilizing the potential of bamboo ensembles, particularly Arumba, through the application of irregular meters. The study is motivated by the stagnation in the development of bamboo music repertoire, which tends to only adapt popular works without significant innovation. The purpose of this research is to explain the exploration process, conceptual design, and interpretation of “AWIKAI” as an effort to develop traditional bamboo-based music. The method applied is practice-based research with a qualitative approach, in which the creative practice itself becomes the primary source of knowledge. The creative process includes idea exploration, selection of bamboo and wooden instruments, musical experimentation, composition sketching, trials with professional musicians, and the final presentation in a performance. The findings show that the application of irregular meters in bamboo ensembles can enrich rhythmic expression, open possibilities for new playing techniques, and expand the timbral palette of traditional instruments. The final composition “AWIKAI” demonstrates that bamboo ensembles can adapt to complex metric structures without losing their aesthetic identity. The implications of this research include contributions to the theory of traditional music composition, enhancement of innovation in bamboo music repertoire, and potential development for composition learning in music education.
