    Abstract

This study aims to understand the gender construction of female smokers as a symbol of resistance to patriarchal culture, with a focus on Sundanese and Batak female students at the Indonesia University of Education. Female smokers are often perceived as deviating from social norms and face negative stigma, particularly in societies with strong patriarchal values. This research employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to explore the subjective meanings constructed by participants through their daily experiences. Data were collected through interviews, observations, literature review, and documentation. The findings reveal three main points. First, the gender construction of female smokers is shaped by the internalization of patriarchal values that confine women to domestic roles and label smoking as a masculine practice. Female students who smoke are often seen as violating feminine ideals and are positioned within social stigma. Second, smoking is interpreted in diverse ways, some students regard it as a symbol of resistance against stereotypes and gender double standards, as well as a medium of self-expression and identity negotiation in public spaces, while others see it merely as a form of personal comfort without direct relation to feminist narratives. Third, the experience of facing stigma encourages students to develop adaptive strategies, such as concealing their smoker identity, choosing more permissive spaces, and redefining smoking as a form of personal independence. These findings are analyzed using social construction theory (Peter Berger & Thomas Luckmann), symbolic interactionism (George Herbert Mead), and the concept of social stigma (Erving Goffman). This study affirms that the identity of female smokers is dynamically constructed through social relations and symbolic processes within patriarchal cultural structures.
