    Abstract

Loneliness is a psychological phenomenon commonly experienced by young adults, even those in romantic relationships. Despite having a partner, many individuals still feel lonely due to unsatisfactory relationship quality. According to Attachment Theory (Bowlby, 1969; Ainsworth, 1978), insecure attachment styles both anxious and avoidant—can form maladaptive interaction patterns in relationships, potentially leading to higher loneliness. Meanwhile, Russell’s (1996) conceptualization of loneliness highlights its role as a subjective experience of social isolation. This study aims to examine the influence of insecure attachment styles on loneliness among young adults in dating relationships, with relationship satisfaction as a mediating variable. Using a quantitative approach with a correlational design, the sample consisted of 900 young adults aged 18–29 who had been in a romantic relationship for at least six months. The instruments used included the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 (ULS-3), The Experiences in Close Relationship-Revised (ECR-R), and the Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS). The results of the analysis indicated that anxious attachment style significantly influences loneliness (β = 0.203, p < 0.001) and relationship satisfaction (β = −0.024, p < 0.001), while avoidant attachment style also significantly influenced loneliness (β = 0.324, p < 0.001) and relationship satisfaction (β = −0.312, p < 0.001). Furthermore, relationship satisfaction mediated the effect of anxious attachment style on loneliness (indirect effect = 0.0333; LLCI = 0.0125; ULCI = 0.0696) and avoidant attachment style on loneliness (indirect effect = 0.1650; LLCI = 0.1042; ULCI = 0.2257).
